Background and Question
We are students at West Mifflin Area High School, and we are involved in monitoring a
creek -- Thompson Run, aka Bull Run -- because we believe it is important to stay involved
in the environment and to know what's going on around us. Around this creek there are
a few houses, a road, and woods. Using the data provided, we will be answering the question,
"Does the progression of technology over the last 20 years affect our environment?"

nitrateAs shown above, recent Nitrate levels have severely decreased over the last few years. Past years the levels have been through the roof. |
tds As shown above, recent TDS levels are following the past TDS levels, just at a generally higher level. |
alkalinityAs shown above, recent Alkalinity levels have been lower than in the past. The levels for 1998-2001 were more drastic drops and rises of the graph. |
online data
No data relevant to how technology affects creeks was found.
Answer and hypothesis
To answer the question from above, yes, the progression of technology over the past 20 years does effect our environment. The data above shows how the levels increased and decreased in the era of new and modern technology. I believe the nitrate, TDS, and alkalinity of the water at the study site are of good enough quality to support aquatic life even though there are visible impacts to water quality from the creek throughout the last 20 years.
OUR GOALOur creeks are being polluted. We're changing that. |
